Artisanal saltscapes in Europe: from mining heritage to living cultural landscapes

Katia Hueso Kortekaas

Identidades territorio cultura patrimonio, 2019

Artisanal salt making in Europe is experiencing an unprecedented expansion, thanks to a stronger awareness of quality food products, the protection of a traditional know-how and the maintenance of the natural values of productive landscapes. Over the last century, small solar evaporation salt making sites across the continent had been experiencing a decline, in favour of large, industrial mining facilities. Hand harvested salt was seen as a low-quality product, not fit for its use in food or other applications. In Spain and Portugal alone, from the over 700 former salt making sites, only 10% survived, the rest falling into oblivion. In the early 21st century, some abandoned sites were gaining attention as mining heritage, being recovered as open-air museums. In a few cases, some sites were recovered in extremis as productive sites, becoming (again) living cultural landscapes. In this contribution, we analyse the recovery of twelve saltscapes in Europe, with different degrees of adva...

Salinas and "Saltscape" as a Geological Heritage with a Strong Potential for Tourism and Geoeducation

EMILIO IRANZO-GARCÍA

Geosciences, 2022

Salinas and saltscapes are relevant geoheritage sites with important implications on socioeconomic activities beyond the production of salt, particularly tourism and education. As cultural landscapes, they also have implications related to the identity of their communities. This work presents the study of the patrimonialization processes of four sites in Europe (Añana in Spain, Guérande in France, Læsø in Denmark, and Seˇcovlje in Slovenia). Lessons obtained from these processes may contribute to the recovery and valuation of similar saltscapes and other forms of geoheritage. The study is based on interviews with relevant stakeholders, a survey of the related grey and scientific literature, and a simplified SWOT analysis. Despite their differences in historical background and current management, all four sites share features that have contributed to the success of their patrimonialization processes, such as having a dedicated entity for this purpose or being protected in some way. They also share common threats that need to be addressed, such as the banalization of the heritage discourse. Other saltscapes and geoheritage sites in general may benefit from these common features, which should serve as an inspiration and not as a template. In the end, shifting from a little-known productive, (proto-)industrial activity toward a sustainable, multifunctional landscape in which geoeducation and tourism are paramount contributes to a more resilient and educated society.

Is there a model for successful patrimonalization processes?: A tale of three sites

Katia Hueso Kortekaas

2017

The articles of this issue all express, somehow, wishes related to salt heritage. The first offers the first part of a passionate tale of professor Nikolai Aladin's quest to save the northern Aral sea. The second article explains the results of a more modest, but successful action to recover two salinas in Murcia, SE Spain. Finally, the last article expresses the desire to coordinate efforts to saveguard salt heritage at global level, via the UNESCO's World Heritage programme. We also offer the usual sections of our journal. If the wait between issues of El Alfolí get too long, you can now follow us on twitter (@ipaisalorg) and facebook (www.facebook.com/ ipaisal.org). We hope you enjoy reading us and we would like to invite you to contribute with your work.
