GAME NOTES
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer hits the road for its next two Big West matches beginning Thursday at Long Beach State with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Live stats will be provided for the match. The Matadors wrap up the weekend with a road test at UC Irvine on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN (2-7-1, 0-0-1 Big West) wrapped up non-conference play and opened up its Big West slate in a busy week of action last week. The Matadors dropped a 2-0 decision to San Diego last Thursday at Matador Soccer Field as the Toreros scored twice over the final nine-plus minutes to take the match. Three nights later, CSUN would earn its first point in Big West action by playing to a 1-1 draw with Cal State Fullerton on Sunday at home. The Matadors took the lead in the 15th minute on a goal from Yoshi Rubalcava before holding the one-goal advantage until the 75th minute when the Titans evened the match. Riley Liebsack finished with five saves against Fullerton including a last-second save to preserve the draw.
MATADOR LEADERS
Yoshi Rubalcava's goal last Sunday moved her into a tie with Cailey Jackson for the team lead in goals with two apiece. Each have five points as well to lead the Matadors. Other goal scorers this year include Jackie Victorio and Jordyn Canister. Ashly Torres remains the CSUN leader in assists with two while Canister has taken a team-high 19 shots with 11 on goal. Goalkeeper Riley Liebsack has started all 10 matches in goal for CSUN, posting a Big West-leading 58 saves to go with a 1.60 goals-against-average.
CSUN IN THE BIG WEST
Junior Riley Liebsack enters play this week first in the Big West and 17th nationally in saves with 58 while the Matadors as a team are second in the conference in saves with 61 total. CSUN's team save percentage is also ranked fourth in the Big West at .784.
SCOUTING LONG BEACH STATE
The Beach come in with a 4-4-1 overall record and a 1-0-0 mark in Big West play. In last week's action, the Beach picked up a pair of shutout wins as they knocked off Cornell 1-0 and beat UC Riverside 3-0 in their conference opener. Prior to the season, the Beach were picked to win the Big West this season. The trio of Kassandra Ceja, Liz Worden and Makayla Demelo have two goals apiece this season to lead the team. Ceja, who received Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, has a team-best seven points. In goal, Aurora Schuck has notched 41 saves with a 1.33 GAA on the year.
Series History: Long Beach State leads CSUN 18-9-3 in the all-time series with victories in four straight. Last season, the Beach picked up a 3-1 victory at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN seeks its first win over the Beach since 2019 along with its first win on the road in the series since 2012.
SCOUTING UC IRVINE
The Anteaters own a 2-4-3 overall record with a 0-0-1 mark in conference play. UCI played last week on the road, picking up a 3-2 victory at Pacific before playing to a scoreless tie with UC San Diego. The team is still seeking its first home win of the season after starting 0-2-1. A season ago, UCI won the Big West Championship before advancing to the NCAA Round of 16. Prior to the year, UCI was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the league's head coaches. Laila El Behery and Kaitlyn Paculba have a team-high three goals each while three others have hit the net. Ashley Naylor has seen the most action in goal this season, totaling 22 saves with a 1.60 GAA.
Series History: UC Irvine holds a 12-11-5 edge over CSUN in the all-time matchup. In 2023, the Matadors battled the Anteaters to a scoreless draw in Northridge. Overall, CSUN has gone winless over the last five matches with UCI and seeks its first win since 2019.
